Stephen King is a famous author who is known for his horrific books. King had made lots of memorable characters in his life but, one that catches everyone's attention is IT. IT is known to be a scary clown. While reading The Shining, the book brings indescribable images into your head like no other horror novel could. All the blood, tears and fear make this book one of the scariest novel read. It also brings suspense, surprise and much more into the story while reading it deeper and deeper. Once you start to read it, it will draw you in by sucking you up! You can really say Stephen King is the "King of Horror".
The story starts off as the Torrance family moving into an Overlooked Hotel in the mountains of Colorado for the winter. The Torrance family consist of Jack (the father), Wendy (the wife) and, Danny (the son). Jack has been trying to look for a caretaker job. While looking around, Jack soon fines one and takes up the offer. When Jack gets interviewed the manager tells him about some strange things that happened in the Hotel. Like most horror books, the things that happen inside the Hotel soon start to build up and once the story continues, it becomes more intense. King is very detailed about the whole Hotel and its history. Also giving lots of detail on what might happen. King also puts to much detail in the beginning chapters and wouldn't get to the point.
Continuing on into the Hotel, Danny has noticed that he has a special power that no one else has except him. Danny starts to “Shine” like no other human on Earth. This indescribable ability makes him see a vision about what is going on before it even happens. Later in the story, a character named Hollorann tells him about the special ability he has. Hallorann also explains that he has that same power too. While Danny fines this out he no longer feels like an oddball. King seemed to make this a big theme in the story. Without it, the story would fall flat and this book wouldn’t be a horror at all. King really put good points in this book but, some parts were also unnecessary.
Danny also has a friend named Tony. *Remeber: Tony plays an very important role in this book.* While reading this book and hearing about all of Danny and Tony's adventures, it makes you wonder if Tony could really be an imaginary friend or is Danny just seeing Tony as a ghost. Maybe while seeing Tony Danny uses his “Shinning” ability. King makes you really think about how each person is used in this story and how much of an important role they play. During the chapters with Tony were really good because, they kept me wanting to read more and into the book. King brought out some really good chapters in the middle of the book.
Going deeper into the story, Jack and Wendy play a big role in this book. Jack and Wendy get into a lot of arguments that lead to why Danny acts the way he does. When Danny was younger Jack had broke his arm and Wendy never got over it. Also at times, Jack starts to think about his past and wants to go back to his drinking habits. Also remeber Jacks old habits play an important role. Jack also portrays himself as a bad husband throughout the whole story. He always yelling at Wendy for things that are not really necessary and big. King had also put a little kindness into Jack. King also made sure that Jack could potrays himself as a caring father.
In the end a lot of things happen that give you a rush. Some things that make you want to keep reading, giving off surprises, cliffhangers and etc. The last chapter was really unnecessary because, it seems hard to believe that everything becomes better. King really didnt need some of the chapters he put in the book in the book. King seemed like he wanted to explain ever single detail of what happened and etc.
An overall summary of the book I really kept you on your toes, but the rest seemed to make you want to fall asleep. King had also added a lot of unnecessary details/chapters. The plot of the stroy really started to kick in when finding out what happened in the Hotel. I would recommend this book for people who are willing to read a lot of pages, and like horrors. If you don’t like to read a lot of pages then you might want to skip this book. But if this book strikes you then you could always rend the movie (if too lazy to read all pages). The movie might be better because you could really see what is happening and really feel the pain the characters are going through. An overall view on this book is a 3 out of 5
